‘Drawing is Free’ was created in 2013 by artist Chloe Briggs in Paris.

Drawing is Free is an initiative designed to bring people together around the pleasure and practice of drawing. It began as an invitation to a school community – students, faculty, administration, support staff and friends – to draw together. The idea was to offer drawing sessions that were free to attend and were free from judgement and critique (often reasons why people stop drawing).
The heart-beat of the project settled into weekly meetings for one hour on Monday mornings. Each participant took it in turns to draw and to be drawn to the length of one track of music.
In March 2020 in lockdown, these sessions transferred online and participants join from around the world. Drawing is Free collaborates with and has been commissioned by different institutions to design free educational resources and events to encourage people of all ages, backgrounds and experience to draw. Recent commisions include:

Drawing Projects UK
Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize
Aga Khan Centre Gallery
Foundation Press
Ecole du Breuil

Drawing is Free has been supported by the Arts Council England, Mairie de Paris, and various respected Arts and Education institutions in the U.K. and Europe.
In June 2022, Chloë launched a Patreon with the ambition to grow Drawing is Free’s scope and reach. More than 4500 people are now part of the free community there, and Patreon supporters now allow Chloë to work on Drawing is Free full time.

	The Drawing is Free Approach
Drawing is Free is an approach - an evolving philosophy for drawing practice. Chloë has tried to summarize a few of the key thoughts she offers to people in support of their motivation to draw.

	New Online Guided Portrait Sessions

Join Chloë and Drawing is Free for guided Portrait Drawing sessions. Live online, beginning on 14th July 2026.

Many artists who join the free Monday portrait sessions have told me they would value some guidance in drawing people.
In July, I will be beginning an occasional series of live online guided Portrait Drawing sessions with an invited model.
The first session will be on Tuesday July 14th, 9-10.30am and repeated at 6—7.30pm, Paris Time.︎ Check 9am Paris Time (CEST) in your timezone.
︎ Check 6pm Paris Time (CEST) in your timezone.

The class will be a series of 'recipes' for how to make expressive drawings with different material combinations and approaches. We will look to art history to learn, exercise our ability to look and then see, and find flow. The portrait model will be different each time.

In advance of the class you will be given a materials list with suggested tools, materials and support.
The class will be recorded and can then be used for practice. There is a padlet for sharing your work with the group that took part.
You can book a ticket for the portrait classes with unlimited replays in the Drawing is Free Patreon shop, price €17

(Cost excludes VAT/Sales Tax, currency conversion and any Apple App Store fee. €17 is about £15 / $20. In the UK, the cost after VAT is £18.60).
︎ Buy a Portait Class ticket (17€) on Patreon︎︎︎IMPORTANT: if you buy through the Patreon Mobile App on iOS, Apple adds a 30% App Store fee to the cost of the ticket. You can avoid this additional cost by visiting Patreon on the web in your browser to buy the ticket.

︎ Buy a ticket for the Portrait session on Patreon︎︎︎ (apx. €17, excl. Tax and Apple app store fee.)︎ Check 9am Paris Time (CEST) in your timezone.

︎ Check 6pm Paris Time (CEST) in your timezone.

Help me to create more opportunities for drawing
If you enjoy the work of Drawing is Free, and find it valuable, I would be honoured if you’d consider supporting Drawing is Free at Patreon. Every month I create new drawing prompt booklets, and run online drawing sessions for supporters. You can follow along for free, but paid supporters help create time for me to develop new ideas and projects to benefit everyone.

ETC. Chloe Briggs interviewed by Jake Spicer

A video of a talk with Jake Spicer, about drawing.
Published: June 2024

Jake Spicer of Draw Brighton interviewed Chloe Briggs about the development of her work over the past 20 years, and nurturing a drawing community through 'Drawing is Free'.
In the video Chloe talks us through 20 images that illustrate different stages in the development of her relationship with drawing. She shares twenty years of drawing practice—from rediscovering joy in life drawing to creating Drawing is Free, the weekly online sessions which now reach thousands worldwide. Chloe discusses working with constraints, making art during motherhood, her postal drawing experiments, and how she's built a thriving community around the simple act of drawing together.

About Draw & ETC

Draw Brighton is an independent art school in Brighton, UK. They believe that good quality drawing education should be accessible to everybody and usually run drop-in, short-term and long-term courses from our Brighton studio. Their long running ETC programme is intended to complement their practical workshops with artists’ talks and panel discussions on the themes of drawing, the arts and the body. They also run online life drawing and portait drawing classes through Patreon, which helps fund these online videos.

This week my son’s school proposes ‘Une semaine sans écran’ - a week without screens, an initiative that has been in place since he was in kindergarten. After I have shared all the #drawingisfree drawings this Monday evening I am taking a much needed break from my phone and joining Jackson for a screen break.

As I heard Patti Smith say ‘we need time to daydream’.
I would love to be able to rely less on Instagram for connection and to know that my work and words actually reach those who would like to see it, so this week I shared a letter in the Monday drawing session. You can read it below, or download the PDF.

If you would like to be on my mailing list you can join my Patreon platform for free - I share updates and information there regularly.

	Drawing Is Free - Letter #1 - May 2024

Dear All,
I thought to write to you and share in a different way this week as I go off my phone tomorrow and replace screen-time with drawing for ‘La Semaine sans Ecran’- my son’s school’s initiative to encourage children to take breaks from screens.
I am motivated to try and find other ways of sharing and connecting that do not rely so heavily on algorithms and the addictive tool that Instagram can be. There are slower, more human ways of connecting – a letter for example!
Lots of you Direct Message me on Mondays about how to share your drawings on Instagram, here is how:

As you know I try to repost everything I see to my stories. Recently I have had problems with ‘reach’ because of how Instagram is evolving – with how many people actually see what I post. I am realizing how many of your posts I don’t see too.

On Friday 31st May 2024, 7 - 8pm (UK time) I am excited to have an online conversation with the wonderful Jake Spicer from @draw_brighton about drawing and the summer school I will be running for them in August. It is free.

	A Phone-sized Sketchbook
As part of the Week Without Screens, I have made a phone-sized sketchbook to carry with me alongside my phone.
One of the #drawingisfree prompts that I wrote for @drawingprojectsuk and the education pack for the 2022 Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize was to make a sketchbook the same dimensions as an iphone. Here is an example of one I made one for Jack and I.

After drawing with you all on Zoom on Monday 27th May, I will replace my phone (at least, try my very best to replace my phone!) with this book and drawing materials for a week.

Jack will draw instead of watching Netflix. I’m excited to see what happens 🙌✏️
I showed this prototype to a group of teenagers that @lillian.davies and I worked with this afternoon and they seemed to think it was cool. So…The RecipeBlack paper for covers 1 x A1 sheet of paper (cut into three strips (56cm x 15cm) 2 pieces of card (15cm x 7cm)- I use back board of sketchbooksMasking tapeRulerPencilKraft knifePVA glueBrush for glueBone folder tool or the back of a spoonScrap paperGlue your two pieces of card to the black paper (black like a screen!) with the PVA glue. Cut enough of the excess so that you have a cm or so to fold over - use the bone tool or spoon to fold a crisp edge.
Fold your three strips of paper like a concertina, each strip should be folded 7 times to make a page that is 7cm x 15 cm. Connect all three in to a long concertina using tape.
Glue your concertina to the back of the black, card covers. Turn off your phone and draw ❤️

2023-12 Talk for Cork Textiles Network

Watch Chloë Briggs’ talk about drawing and stitching, given to the Cork Textile Network.
Published: December 2023

Chloë Briggs was recently invited to talk to the Cork Textile Network - a real privilege.
"No one's asked me to do that before. I feel honoured that I'm in this kind of context with lots of textile artists and people who work that way."
Chloe trained as a fine artist, and drawing remains her most immediate way of working. But lockdown gave her time and permission to try something new. First quilts, then repair, and now more ambitious pieces: capes made from found parasols, a kimono from vintage silk, and portraits stitched onto a secondhand bomber jacket.

The two practices turn out to be less different than they might seem. Couching, where you lay a thread on the surface and stitch it down, feels exactly like making a line. A fellow artist watching her work put it well: they were drawing in slow motion.

A key figure in Chloë's textile work is Welsh artist Angela Maddock, whom she met during lockdown after Angela generously made and distributed repair kits and offered workshops to go with them. They’ve become friends and collaborators, running a two-week residency together in Paris exploring nature in the city, and combining drawing and stitch in workshops that Chloë describes as giving as much back to her as she puts in.

Chloë also spoke about working with constraints and found materials — a parasol frame from the streets of Rotterdam, threads from a charity shop bag, her son's old jeans turned into an apron — and why she finds that the tighter the constraint, the more interesting the work becomes.
Working with textiles is about working things out for the good. “This repairing has a connection to mental health. Certainly for me it’s something that helps me, that calms and centers me. When I work with repetitive stitching my thoughts unravel and I’m present."

The talk is about an hour long and covers drawing, textiles, repair, and the connections between them all.
